Amazing Gluten Free Biscuits And Gravy

I was raised eating and loving biscuits and gravy. Since I had to go gluten free three years ago, I was yearning to find a recipe that would compare to what I remembered from my childhood.  Using gluten free flour to make the gravy wasn’t the hard part, it was finding a good biscuit recipe.  Most of the recipes I tried the biscuits came out really dense and crumbly.  Not what I wanted.  I finally found a biscuit recipe that both my family and I enjoy.

Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Gluten Free Flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour)
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon White Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Butter Flavored Crisco
  • 1 Cup Milk

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar

  • Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal.  Gradually stir in milk. Dough will be wet and sticky.  If the dough seems to crumbly, add a little more milk.

  • Turn onto a floured surface.  Sprinkle a little flour on top and knead the dough 4 or 5 times.  If the surface or the dough gets sticky, again sprinkle surface and top of dough with flour.  Continue kneading until the dough is no longer sticky, but not dry.

  • Pat dough to 1 inch thick.  Cut biscuits out with a large cutter or I use a glass dipped in flour.
  • Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet.

My daughter really likes when I make her a heart biscuit, so I usually try to do this for her.

  • Bake 13 minutes or until edges and bottom are lightly brown.  You can brush the tops with butter if you would like.  I cover mine in gravy, so I don’t put the butter on top.

Sausage Gravy

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound sausage
  • 1/4 to 1/2 Cup Gluten Free Flour
  • Milk
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:

  • Brown and crumble the sausage in a large skillet.  Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup flour to skillet.

  • Stir sausage and flour together until combined.

  • Gradually stir in milk.  I add just enough to cover the sausage and cook on medium heat until it starts to thicken up.  I then add more milk until I get the consistency I want.

Serve the gravy over hot biscuits and hash browns if desired.  We like to have southern style hash browns with our biscuits and gravy.  Enjoy!
